Day 1: Mystical Caves & Crater Trails

Your journey with Upcountry Safaris Uganda begins with an early morning transfer from Kampala to the lush highlands of Fort Portal. Explore the Amabere Ga Nyina Mwiru caves, rich in myth and legend, followed by a scenic trek to the stunning Nyakasura Falls and crater lakes. After a fulfilling adventure, we journey to Queen Elizabeth National Park, pausing at the Equator line for a classic photo opportunity.

Day 2: Safari Majesty & Salt Harvesting Secrets
Queen Elizabeth National Park – Mweya Peninsula – Katwe Salt Mines
Rise with the wild for an early morning game drive across the Kasenyi plains in search of lions, elephants, buffalo, and the elusive leopard. After breakfast, we navigate to the breathtaking Mweya Peninsula for panoramic views over the Kazinga Channel. Later, step into the ancient traditions of the Katwe Salt Mines, where salt extraction techniques have thrived for centuries.

Day 3: Tree-Climbing Lions & Misty Mountains

An early morning trek through the dense jungle brings you face-to-face with a mountain gorilla family — an awe-inspiring, once-in-a-lifetime experience. After the trek, we transfer to Mbarara, stopping at the renowned Igongo Cultural Centre for a deep dive into Ankole heritage and cuisine.

Day 5: Wild Dawn & Journey Home
Mbarara – Lake Mburo – Kampala

Gorilla trekking in Uganda happens in two main parks:
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (most popular, with several sectors)
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
Yes! A gorilla trekking permit is mandatory.
The cost is $800 for foreign non-residents, $700 for foreign residents, and UGX 300,000 for East African citizens (as of 2024).
Permits are issued by Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).

A licensed tour operator or travel agency (usually more convenient and comes as a package)
It depends! Gorilla trekking ranges from easy to strenuous, depending on the location of the gorilla family and terrain.
Some treks last 1–2 hours, others can go up to 6+ hours.
A moderate fitness level is recommended.
Essentials include:
Hiking boots (good grip)
Long pants & long-sleeved shirt (protection from thorns/insects)
Rain jacket (rain is common)
Gloves (for grabbing vegetation)
Insect repellent, sunscreen, hat, snacks, and water
Only those 15 years and older are allowed to trek.
Once a gorilla family is located, visitors are allowed one hour with them to observe and take photos.
